Science VERTEBRATE ANIMAL GROUPS

Mini Animal Research project:

This can be a one page (11 x 14) project to demonstrate knowledge and research of animal classification. The animal chosen MUST be a WILD animal that is a VERTEBRATE.
Information must include:

A Title: Name of Animal
A statement that the animal is a vertebrate - and why (what makes it a vertebrate).
A statement that the animal is wild- and why (what makes it wild).
A statement of the name of the Vertebrate Group the animal belongs to - and why (What characteristics does the animal have that make it belong in the group? (Warm-Blooded or Cold-Blooded MUST be included, as well as body covering and other important features of why the animal belongs in the group).
A statement of the kinds of food the animal eats.
A statement of how it is classified as an eater : Carnivore, Herbivore, Omnivore, or Insectivore -and why.
A statement of an example of a shelter that the animal has/uses.
A statement of a LOGICAL place/ source of water for the animal.

Proper sentences and spelling will be part of this assessment, as we are now working on writing proper sentences that begin with a capital and end with a period of some sort. Each sentence should be complete with a subject ( Who? or What? part) and predicate (is what?/ has what? does what? part). It is expected that the sentences and words are grade 3 level words, which are NOT words copied from sources !

Neatness, effort, and organization will be included in the final assessment.

A photo, illustration, drawing, or picture of the animal, its' food, its' shelter.
A statement of 1 interesting fact about the animal.

DUE ; Tuesday November 29
All of this information will be reviewed in class and some time will be given to search for information from books or the internet. Students may borrow a book from the classroom if needed.

This is the first "home-project" that kids will be doing this year. Help make it a positive experience for your child. Students have Thursday afternoon off this week... It is important that children learn to make responsible use of this time for this project. A visit to the public library is encouraged! Help your child with time management--- leaving it to the night before it is due will cause stress and anxiety!!!

Needs of Animals-

All animals need FOOD, WATER, SPACE/AIR , and SHELTER to survive !
Through videos, reading materials, songs, centers, and worksheets, we have explored these animal needs.
We have looked at how animals are classified as eaters: Carnivore, Herbivore, Omnivore, and Insectivore.

Vertebrate animal groups-

There are 5 vertebrate animal groups (Animals with Backbones):
BIRDS,
FISH,
REPTILE,
AMPHIBIAN,
MAMMAL

Test: Wed. Nov. 9
Know the things (characteristics/traits) which make the animal part of the group. (See the posters below)
Name at least 2 animals in each group.
